Personality[]
Sua Hyun (현수아, Hyun Sua) is the main antagonist of the series. She is a freshman from the Chemistry Department of Hankuk University.
Sua is a really complex character. In the series, it was shown that when she was little, she was also bullied and made fun of by other students at her school, but as soon as her mother gave her that glow up, she became cute and pretty and everyone started liking her and she got used to being the center of attention and carried on with it in her life ahead. She wanted to be a perfect girl and be the crush of every boy to continue her popularity. She gives off the air of a gentle, innocent character, but it can all be seen as an act, such as when she can immediately shed tears if a situation goes downhill. She easily becomes jealous if anyone else grabs attention, which leads to her manipulating people around her (especially Mirae), and she has an obsession with wanting to be seen as having a perfect life because of her insecurities.
She is also willing to go to extremes, such as deliberately hurting herself (like when she willingly dropped the flask in episode 3 and spilled acid on her foot), to steal attention after Mirae burned her hand. She couldn't stand anyone else taking center stage and plots her way to draw everyone's attention onto herself.
However, underneath it all, Sua is most critical of herself. She believes that she can be happy only if she is the prettiest person in the room. This stems from her own insecurities that stemmed from childhood. She is bulimic and can also get anxious. She is highly concerned about her own appearance, almost to an obsession, and strives to ensure no one finds out about her own insecurities.
After getting attacked by Dong Won and getting saved by Mirae, Sua starts to try to change herself to no longer obsess about appearances. She is grateful to Mirae for understanding what she has gone through and for reprimanding her for her actions when no one else would.
Background[]
She was abandoned by her parents when she was young and raised by her grandmother. She would go to school dirty and unkempt since her grandmother was likely off trying to make money to make ends meet. This was another source of her insecurities as all the kids bullied her for being dirty. Her mother seems to be well off, and though it seems her mother checked on her, she did not stay with Sua, which is one source of her trauma. Getting cleaned up by her mother and having others realize she was pretty and treat her nicely was not enough for Sua to overcome her inner conflict.
Relationships[]
She gets along easily with those she first meets, but this is a facade, an attempt of hers to be liked by everyone around her. This is why Kyung Seok dislikes her because she seems insincere. The only time he truly converses with her politely and without hostility is once she does show her sincerity and her true self at the end of the drama.
One character who seems to see through her struggles and attempts to help her is her fellow classmate, Eun. Eun consistently tries to ask Sua to let her know if she needs someone to talk to because she can see through Sua's attempts to hide her true self.
Sua disliked Mirae from the moment she met her, which stemmed from her belief that only naturally pretty people deserve to be happy. She sees Mirae and her plastic surgery as a personal attack or attempt to steal what is rightfully hers. This mindset of hers drives Sua to scheme all sorts of things to try and make Mirae unhappy, but ultimately, it all blows up in her face when her actions with the upperclassmen is revealed to her classmates. Mirae, on the other hand, liked Sua from the start, but when she noticed the aggressiveness towards her, she realized Sua hated her and started distancing herself from Sua. By the end, the two girls don't fully reconcile, but understand that their struggles were one and the same.
